Nondestructive Testing Methods
2D Ground Penetrating Radar
Also referred to as "Recon" scanning, this method provides essential information to help locate embedded objects within concrete. 2D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is the most commonly used type of GPR because it allows for rapid data acquisition, significantly reducing the time needed for surveying each area.
3D Ground Penetrating Radar
This method is often confused with Concrete X-Ray. 3D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) involves conducting multiple scans of an area. Each scan is transferred to a computer, which combines them to create a 3D model of the tested space. This process aids in locating embedded objects that may have been missed using 2D methods. This helps locate embedded items that may have been overlooked with 2D GPR.
Utility Scanning - Soils GPR
This type of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can penetrate deep into the soil and is used to locate embedded items, voids, and other anomalies. Utility scanning is typically employed to prepare a site for construction. Additionally, it serves as an investigative tool to identify known items in the soil, such as property stakes, utility lines, and burial plots.
Industrial Radiography - Concrete XRay
This method is used to identify and avoid embedded objects within the concrete. A radioactive isotope is placed on one side of the concrete, while a CCD detector is positioned on the opposite side. The radiation penetrates the concrete and exposes the detector, which generates an image of the embedded items. This process allows us to clearly see what is inside the concrete and determine the best approach to avoid damaging these items. Once a safe area is identified on the slab, Concrete Imaging, Inc. will provide a warranty for that section, ensuring that you can proceed with drilling and will not damage any post-tension cables, PVC conduits, or other items that need to be preserved.
CCTV Video Pipe Inspection
This method is used to inspect and assess the condition of pipes. A video camera is inserted into one end of the pipe, and footage is recorded as the camera is pushed further inside. Images and videos are documented for the report to note any damage, blockages, or items of concern. The inspection system can also be equipped with an anode attachment, allowing the technician to trace the route of the pipe.
Utility Sweeping - Utility Locating
This method uses a locator to detect and trace items within the soil that have an electromagnetic field. Items located with an electromagnetic field often indicates there is an energized circuit present. Additionally, the locator can be used to trace specific radiofrequencies and track signals from anode attachments.

"Concrete Imaging Inc has been my preferred vendor for X rays and GPR testing at our post tensioned property for the past 5 years. The Concrete Imaging X ray crews that are sent out to the site have outperformed the competition with their general knowledge of the X-ray process, safety, communication with the onsite engineering team, and finally the layout of the area being scanned. I look forward to using Concrete Imaging for all of our scans going forward."
